The ZF is a rough shifting tranny, it starts off rough, slow, it shifts slow. Some times it has a mind of its own, it gets confused. Example, your rolling at 5 MPH trying to yield, you step on the gas pedal it could be in 4th gear, nothing will happen then it will shift down to third and take off. OR, same scenario except your in 3rd or 4th rolling and when its time to move you step on the gas and it starts bucking like a bull. I've had more positive experiences after witnessing Eaton Fuller auto-shifts, take a look at the Volvo I-Shift you won't look back at the ZF. The ZF-Astronic has the ability to hold any gear, it is impossible to stall out, although I have heard of it malfunctioning. Video's taken were in Van Hool C model coaches with CAT-C13 ACERT engines. There is a hill start function, there is no button that you press, when the coach is completely stopped and service brake is on, when you lift off the service brake the front brakes are applied about 3 seconds.

On some coaches it does not work for reasons unknown. The transmission can be operated smoothly, but you have to baby the throttle and maniuplate it which is not practicle when you have dead lines to meet, green lights to catch, lanes to change, on ramps to merge, and traffic to enter. To all drivers, regardless of engine, once these ZF auto shifts hit 8th gear, they shift at approximately 1,750 RPM.

Holding the gear allows you to go up to 2,200 RPM. These transmissions sound best with the C12(before they turned into the C-13), and sound hands down #1 with the Detroit series 60 EGR. The CAT C-13 sounds like shit. Cummin's, better than the CAT but not as good as the Detroit.

I've seen a story where a driver in a tractor trailer going down hill with an Eaton Fuller tranny was holding 7th gear, when out of no where it shifted into 10th gear. He smoked his brakes but thankfully avoided an accident. Just shows these auto shifts are not perfect. Passengers have gotten motion sickness, some find them neat and ask the driver how they can shift without the shifter or clutch up front and some simply find them rough and uncomfortable like most drivers. I'd rather have a real manual, although the Volvo I-Shift is very impressive.

The shifter is in a poor location, its very uncomfortable to shift manually. I have seen European coaches equipped with the ZF-Astronic with a gear shifter to the right of the driver, or to the left of the driver depending on left hand or right hand drive configuration. Rate, comment, subscribe.
