I presume you have set the machine for free motion quilting in the Menu? There are so many things that could be causing this, and so many variables for tweaking it to optimum performance. What foot are you using? What menu setting?

Have you tried loosening the top thread tension? Bobbin tension? I will keep a lookout for further posts from you with a bit more info that we can start working on. I have a Designer1, not the SE, but have used an Se so will try my best to help. Dec 15, 2010. If you are adjusting the upper tension on your machine and yet there is no difference to the sewing, it seems to me that maybe your upper thread is not in the tension disks correctly. Re-thread taking care to make sure the threads bed down into the tension disks.

I pull off about 2 foot of thread from the spool and put my right-hand finger on the thread very close to the spool (the idea is to hold it down so it doesn't move) then use my left hand to take the thread through the thread run. Once I get close to the needle, I tug the thread a little and you can hear/feel it go into the tension disk. Sometimes it looks like the top thread is the problem, but in fact it is the bobbin which is at fault. Re-insert your bobbin again taking care to click it into its tension slot. If you are still getting bad results, try loosening off the bobbin tension. Use a tiny screwdriver to turn the tension screw (the one just on the outside of the tension slot). Turn it no more than 1/5th of a circle at a time (to the right to tighten, to the left to loosen) then put bobbin back in and test.

You should not need to adjust it more than two or at most three times. If you do, something is seriously wrong with your machine's tensions and it needs to see the Sewing Machine Doctor. May 25, 2010. Designer 1 bobbin case tension adjustment: When the bobbin runs out, sometimes it bends the bobbin case tension spring. Then tension is too light.

Take the bobbin case out of the machine. Tie the loose bobbin thread to the Designer 1 needle plate. Insert the bobbin in the bobbin case. Here’s the tricky part set the bobbin case on the table as if it’s in the machine (Bobbin is visible and sitting horizontal to table top) threaded as if sewing and loose end tied to needle plate (that is removed from the machine). Lift the bobbin case off the table rotate it so that the flat side of the bobbin are vertical to the table and no longer horizontal. Have the bobbin case oriented so that the thread coming out of the bobbin case sprint (slot area where it is put for sewing) is at the top. Lift it high enough that the needle plate is lifted from the table.
