Just wondering what you guys think about them? I work in Sanford,NC where these are built and just looking feedback good or bad. I work in the R and D dept. So always looking at improving and changing things.

I have worked on these for the past 6 years so im very familar with A-series, B-series, B-2 series and C-series SSL, MTL and CTL loaders. If you having any issues with yours and could use some advice on to locate whats wrong or how to change things just give me a buzz always looking to help all you loyal Cat owners out there. First, the air filter system is garbage, 2 hours in dusty conditons and the primary filter is toast. To my knowledge, there is no factory upgrade for this problem. I know some guys have fitted cyclone precleaners and the like behind the cab above the rear deck, which is great, but why can't Cat figure this out? I think the 216/226 platform competes very well in their respective classes, but I feel Cat is getting their lunch money stolen in the 2,000 pound ROC classes by others.

The anti stall system I'm on the fence about but it seems like power to the ground needs to be improved in the larger models. I have not had a chance to run a C series machine yet, so I will preface my remarks about a low rental 246B I did run by saying that. Center of gravity on that machine was terrible, had absolutely no juice for lifting whatsoever. For a machine that supposedly has the same powerplant as a 277B, it sure didn't lift like it did.

The 277 would easily walk it when it came to pushing power and the like, comparing apples to oranges, but the 246 was weak in the lift circuit whereas I didn't feel that lack of performance in the 277. You got a volt meter handy? Greatest tool ever when diagnosing electrical issues. But I always start simpliest first, if you have problem with getting power to start, I always start at the source. Check the batteries charge and make sure its good, then check to see if your terminals are tight on the post, then work your way with a volt meter to the source and see where you arent getting power. Yes I know on C-series that acessing the battery is quite a pain. How new a 272C is it?

As far as the breather, thats is ones of the biggest complaints. I know excatly where you are coming from, in the dry months here with orange clay the dust is horrible and constant attention must be applied to the breather and saftey filter, sorry but no current repair has been developed to fix this in certain situations. But as far as comparing a 277B to a 246B the engine are shared but the 277 has the A-22 pump which outflows the 246 pump handily in LPM and also the implement valve in the 246 have the same operating pressure but releifs are set at different loads to keep to large a load from tipping the machine.

We have come a long way since the B series Beta Models which have become C-series and the Alphas are B2. As far as power I hear you, I have proably operated just about every skid steer under the sun and in Torque rise we seriously are lagging. Most recently had a chance to run John Deere's 332 and 322 models and those 5 cylinder 3.0 liters have one of the best torque rises ive ever seen, great power but fuel economy is a trade off along with its also a 5 cylinder vs Cats 4. Have driven all the new Cases, Bobcats, Gehl, John Deeres, JCB, etc and soon to be a Kubota CTL if and when its ever released. Yes im a big track machine fan, they work great in alot of application but the wheel machines have there place as well.

Tracks require upkeep especially that earlier generation A-series B-series tracks, C's dont seem to be as bad. Tensioning on the old undercarriage is awful, when they installed the tensioner in the rear of the machine. The newer CTLs are great as far as power, center of gravity, great ride, easier to maintain, grease ram tensioner makes it easy to tension and also if and when it comes time to replace. Get rid of the Perkins engines in the small frames for a Mitsubishi engines or anything Asian built, I hate having to constantly add oil to the damn thing only to add more after 20 hours, either get rid the the Perkins or have them already broken in from the Perkins factory. All the farmers here that have tractors that are Perkins powered, all complain of the oil burning issue when they are new. The air filters for the cab/engine could be better on the B's, as well as the weather stripping that goes around the HVAC box under the cab, I had to add some major foam self adhesive strips in there to seal it up, my cab is now extremely tight now.

Give the injector pumps (on the small frames) 3/4 of a turn out on the fuel, I turned up my injector pump half a turn and the power (and fuel efficiency) was way better from factory, also crank up the relief pressures on the loader/bucket some more, I will do this myself in the slower times. Put a cover over the quick attach springs and wedges, I had to add rubber strips to keep material from packing in there, it's been 100 hours since I removed them for cleaning, that was a major improvement from day 1. Lastly, and I think some will give me a 'woot woot' on this, get the B2's in to the C series now, I want to see a small frame C series in a year, or at best a narrower 279C version with at least 72' of over all width, I love the 279C's power/ROC/length/height, but the 78' width is too much and putting a 14' wide track on it would add too much PSI. My teeny RC50 is rated for 15 degrees and I think their PT100 is rated for a 3-1(18 degrees) side to side. ASV is even cool enough to include a level gauge on the instrument panel in each of their machines.

Why does bobcat tell me that I can’t use the float function unless I’m going backwards? Why does the Bobcat blow all that air out the sides of the machine so that it makes a big dust cloud when I operate next to a building or wall? Why does Bobcat insist (even after all of these years) on stacking the cooler, radiator and A/C condenser on top of each other with nothing other than cheesy little tabs (you also have to dink around with that stupid overflow tank to remove the fasteners). They even warn you twice to be careful not to drop the condenser onto the cooler or drop the cooler onto the radiator.

Man I could go on and on about the things that bothered the hell out of me when I sold them and the worst part is that they haven’t changed some of the stuff since I left. Oh yeah, why do I need to constantly tension my Bobcat tracks to keep from throwing a track when I’m on an unauthorized slope (as per the manual). If we didn’t do it at least once a week on a rental we knew we’d be putting a track back on. I’ve never tensioned my RC50 more than twice in a year. I can’t speak for the other ASV undercarriages but in the RC50/60/247/257 it’s a moot argument. I’m sure Ron could add some more color since he was an owner and I only sold them for 8 years.
